Construction related to the 26 Avenue S.W. Improvements project is expected to start in late July or early August. This month’s update provides an overview of upcoming construction activities and details about the Construction Information Session on July 22.
Upcoming construction
Work will be completed in short sections along the corridor to help minimize disruptions. Unless otherwise noted, construction activities may occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Construction activities may include:
Concrete work, including pathways, bike lane medians, curbs and curb ramps
Road reconstruction and repaving
Street lighting upgrades
Transit station upgrades
Underground water main replacements
Storm system improvements
What to expect:
Construction crews and heavy equipment working in the area
Increased noise, dust, and vibration
Temporary traffic lane closures and detours
Temporary changes to cycling and pedestrian routes
Temporary on-street parking restrictions
Periodic driveway access restrictions
Tree pruning where needed to protect trees and support safe construction activities
Every effort will be made to maintain access to homes, businesses and properties throughout construction. If temporary access changes are required, affected residents and businesses will be notified in advance whenever possible. Safety reminder: Construction zones can be hazardous. Please stay clear of active work areas and follow all posted signs, detours and directions from flaggers and construction personnel.
Water main replacement: 14 Street S.W. to 18 Street S.W.
While safety and mobility improvements are underway, The City is taking the opportunity to replace aging water mains along 26 Avenue S.W. in the following areas:
14 Street S.W. to 15 Street S.W.
16A Street S.W. to 18 Street S.W.
Temporary water impacts As part of the water main replacement work, some properties along 25 Avenue S.W. and 26 Avenue S.W. between 14 Street S.W. and 19 Street S.W. may experience:
Temporary water shut-offs: Affected properties will receive at least 48 hours' notice before planned shut-offs. Water service is typically restored within eight hours.
Temporary water service connections: For longer disruptions, some properties may be connected to a temporary water supply. Affected property owners will be notified in advance.
Access to some properties may be required to install or maintain temporary water service. If your property is affected, the contractor will contact the owner or property manager to arrange access. Fire suppression system impacts Please note, water-based fire suppression systems, including sprinklers, will not operate during planned water shut-offs or while a building is connected to temporary water service. Property owners and managers can contact the project team at 26aveSW@calgary.ca with any questions or site-specific considerations.
